Graphic Designer
Mbongeni Yaka, born in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa, is a distinguished artist and producer. Yaka received formal art training and graduated in 2018. His professional journey includes an internship in graphic design at EdgeBD in 2018 and a role as a business administrator at Afridrum Productions in 2023.
Yaka’s career highlights include his solo musical show, “Life In Tune”,which happened on September 29, 2024, featuring Malcolm The Psychedelic, Avile., Virkil Khaan, Soule Amari, Chris 01, Jeremy Earth, VoixofKamo and Born Fire Rebelz. His work spans from mural art, traditional painting, and music production, showcasing his diverse artistic talents.
Artist Statement: Mbongeni Yaka
My artistic practice encompasses painting, performance, drawing, and multi-disciplinary approaches. I explore a range of styles including landscape, figurative, and abstract forms. My choice of materials is diverse, including canvas, brushes, recyclable materials, watercolour, gouache, and acrylic paint, among others.
What makes my practice distinctive is the freedom it affords me. I am not confined by traditional boundaries, allowing me to delve into profound thoughts and concepts of life. This openness is crucial for me as it fosters an environment where I can fully express my innermost ideas.
My work is deeply influenced by hip-hop producers such as Madlib, MF Doom, and The Alchemist, as well as movements like Wu-Tang Clan. These influences resonate with me because of their innovative spirit and their ability to create distinct worlds of music and art. They inspire me to forge my own path and explore new dimensions within my creative practice.
